Rochester, New York, is where Cryer was born. After graduating from Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut, she continued her education at Yale University and earned a degree in English literature there. Following that, she started reading for a master's degree at the Yale School of Drama. She spent a late spring season at this period acting in the Utah Shakespeare Festival, playing roles such as Rosalind in As You Like It and Anne in Richard III. Following graduation, she appeared on TV programs at Hartford Stage in The Rivals and Baltimore Center Stage in Don Juan. In addition, she received a minimal commendation for her performance in the Southcoast Repertory Theater premiere of Collected Stories, a two-person piece by Donald Margulies.
