The oldest child of a Methodist minister, Susanna Clarke, was born in Nottingham, England, in 1959. She studied at Oxford and taught governmental and financial affairs theory at St. Hilda's College. Her 2004 release of the bestselling novel Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell won her an accolade.
Before relocating to Turin, Italy, in 1990, Clarke spent eight years working in the distribution industry. She first taught English to Fiat engine employees in Italy before traveling to Bilbao, Spain, to continue her job in 1991. In 1992, she relocated back to England. She began working on Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in 1993.
