Susan Shaw has spent the last two decades studying the effects of environmental pollutants on marine species. She is recognized for being the first to demonstrate that flame-retardant chemicals in consumer items had polluted marine animals and economically valuable fish species in the northwest Atlantic Ocean.
Shaw, an outspoken and important voice on ocean pollution, dived into the Gulf oil slick in May to see how oil and dispersants are affecting life in the water column firsthand. Her experience spurred her to urge a Gulf-wide collaboration to track the consequences of the chemicals as they spread through the food chain.
