Susan Savage-Rumbaugh has thrown a wrench into the enormous dispute over insight and intuition—about what makes us human. Her work with chimpanzees has forced new questions about whether some abilities we attribute to species are due to a creature's social environment, which has limited another viewpoint on attributes that are really and distinctively human.

She frequently accepts cultural norms and customs in addition to scientific representations of differences between humans and other primates. Her bonobo chimpanzees, notably a smart one named Kanzi, can converse in English and have learned to carry out tasks previously thought to be reserved for humans, including starting and managing a fire. However, they lack excellent human-creature design preparation.
