Susan McClary Biography

Susan McClary, a professor of music at Case Western Reserve University with a Harvard Ph.D. from 1976, teaches courses in music theory, music history, and taped performance rehearsals. She focuses on the sociological study of music, including traditional and modern mainstream music from Europe. Her work depends on the symbolic components of melodic schemes. It uses this subtle medium in many social behaviors, which is interesting given the aesthetic habit that views music as indescribable and otherworldly. She is well known for her 1991 book Feminine Endings: Music Gender and Sexuality, which examines contemporary trends in sex, sexuality, and the body across various musical repertoires, from Madonna songs to plays from the middle of the eighteenth century. McClary is also the author of Georges Bizet: Carmen (1992), Conventional Wisdom: The Content of Musical Form (2000), and Music and Society: The Politics of Composition Performance and Reception, which she co-manages with Richard Leppert (1987). In addition, she explores the various ways that subjectivities have been seen in music from the sixteenth century onward in her later publications.
