The founding chair of Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy is Susan Axelrod (CURE). In 1998, Axelrod and two other mothers who were dissatisfied with their inability to protect their children from the devastation of wild seizures and the side effects of medications banded together to spearhead the search for a cure for epilepsy. Under Susan's leadership, CURE successfully redefined the goals of epilepsy research by funding prizes for cutting-edge research, exploring new areas, and sponsoring milestone meetings. Susan and CURE received the prestigious 2008 Child Neurology Foundation Advocacy Award of Merit for their commitment to the welfare of epileptic patients. Susan has worked as a shopper commentator for the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program in the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program inside the Department of Defense as well as on the National Advisory Neurological Disorders and Stroke Council of the National Institutes of Health. She has benefited from several accolades and appreciation for her tenacious promotion. Susan, a mother of three, lives in Chicago with David, her better half. Lauren, her oldest child, began suffering violent seizures at the age of seven months. These seizures have significantly delayed Lauren's development, but no cause has been identified. Lauren finally succeeded in controlling her seizures in 2000 after 18 tense years of trying—more than 20 medicines, one-of-a-kind weight management strategies, an electronic embed, and repeated thorough exams. Lauren currently resides in Chicago and works in a respected private program.
