Susan Athey is a renowned economist and the Economics of Technology Professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business. She earned her BA from Duke University and PhD from Stanford, later receiving honorary doctorates from both institutions. A pioneer in digital economics, she researches internet platforms, online advertising auctions, big data, machine learning applications, marketplace design, and antitrust in tech. She was the first woman to win the John Bates Clark Medal in 2007 for the top U.S. economist under 40. She served as a consulting chief economist at Microsoft, as Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division (2022–2024), as 2023 President of the American Economic Association, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Athey also founded Stanford's Golub Capital Social Impact Lab and is a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI.
