Suleika Jaouad Biography

Suleika Jaouad is an illness survivor, advocate, and author who has won an Emmy Award. She is the author of the well-known Life Interrupted segment and the focus of a going-with video piece in the New York Times. She has also written for the Huffington Post and Vogue Glamor Women's Health. Suleika was listed as one of Mogul's "35 Under 35" globally compelling and inventive young women. Suleika was born in New York City to a Tunisian father and a Swiss mother. As a result of her global upbringing, she has a variety of beneficial interests. Suleika graduated with the highest honors in 2010 from Princeton University, where she double minored in French and Gender Studies while studying Near Eastern Studies. Suleika worked on many human rights campaigns when she was a student at Princeton for the African Union, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and Oxfam. She spent much of her time abroad in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Ethiopia, where she researched and wrote extensively about women's issues. When Suleika was diagnosed with the myelodysplastic disease and severe myeloid leukemia at age 22, less than a year after graduating from college, her career aspirations as a war correspondent were put on hold. She is presently dying after three years of chemotherapy, a life-saving medical procedure, and a bone marrow transplant. She began reading her New York Times section while receiving a bone marrow transplant at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and since then, she has been an outspoken advocate for those dealing with cancer and other chronic illnesses. She published her first diary in 2020, which detailed her illness and subsequent recovery via repair and self-disclosure.
