Suja Lowenthal Biography

On June 6th, 2006, Dr. Suja Lowenthal was chosen to address the Second District in a unique political contest that was hanging. In June 2008, she was reappointed to a four-year term after winning an uncontested race. In 2010, her fellow council members elected her vice mayor. She graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, California State University, Los Angeles with a Master of Business Administration, and USC with a Doctorate in Policy Planning and Development. Suja was appointed to the Long Beach Unified School District's board of education in 2001, and she assisted in its recognition by the Broad Foundation as the greatest urban school district in the nation. She served as a stand-in for the California Coastal Commission, and she currently represents Long Beach on the board of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, a grouping of 26 cities and water districts responsible for providing high-quality, dependable drinking water to nearly 18 million people in Los Angeles and the surrounding regions. Suja also serves as a representative on the governing board of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and on the executive committee of Heal the Bay. Suja's background in the field includes her work as the Coordinator of the Domestic Violence Unit for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office and the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging. She has also worked in Southern California's Central Basin Municipal Water District, West Basin Municipal Water District, and Water Replenishment District as a strategic consultant for more than ten years. She began teaching an upper-division course on California's water flexibly water-valuing and best practices for water management in 2007 when she joined the Geological Sciences faculty as an adjunct professor at California State University Long Beach. Currently, she is teaching a class on public policy.
