The Hole in the Wall tests developed by educational analyst Dr. Sugata Mitra has shown that children may express themselves and one another without adult supervision or formal education if they are motivated by curiosity or friend intrigue.
In 1999, Mitra and his collaborators dug a hole in a wall separating a New Delhi urban slum, installed an Internet-connected PC there, and left it (with a concealed camera shooting the region). They saw slum children tinkering with the computer, learning how to use it and browse the web while doing so, and then teaching one another.
