Steven Chu is an American physicist, Nobel Laureate, and former U.S. Secretary of Energy. He was born to Chinese immigrant parents in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended the University of Rochester and earned a B.A. in mathematics and a B.S. in physics from UC Berkeley. In 1997, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and William D. Phillips, for developing methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light, a breakthrough in atomic physics.
Chu served as the 12th U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2009 to 2013 under President Barack Obama, focusing on clean energy, climate change solutions, and scientific innovation. He championed renewable energy investments, advanced battery research, and nuclear safety reforms. Before that, he was director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2004–2009) and a professor at Stanford University and UC Berkeley, where he is now the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Physics and Molecular and Cellular Physiology.
