Steve Wynn was born in 1942 in New Haven, Connecticut, to a father and a younger brother. In 1963, Wynn earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. During his studies, he met and married Elaine Pascal, with whom he had two daughters, Kevyn and Gillian, in 1963.
Wynn's father operated a chain of bingo parlors; he died during open-heart surgery just before Wynn graduated from university, leaving Wynn in charge of the family's bingo operation in Maryland. He obtained enough money to purchase a modest share in the Las Vegas Frontier Hotel and Casino.
