About Steve Van Zandt

Steve Van Zandt Biography

He is most known as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, where he plays guitar and mandolin, and as an on-screen character in the television program The Sopranos. Van Zandt, sometimes known as Little Steven or Miami Steve, is a seasoned guitarist, arranger, and producer best known for his work with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. He departed the E Street Band in 1984 (Springsteen's song Bobby Jean largely represents this break) and has since been involved with many solo melodic enterprises and coordinated efforts ranging from soul music to hard rock here and there, fronting a group known as The Disciples of Soul. In 1985, he founded the music-industry dissident organization Artists United Against Apartheid as a protest against the Sun City resort in South Africa. Forty-nine prominent historical artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Bob Dylan, and Run DMC, collaborated on a song called Sun City in which they pledged they would never play at the resort. Van Zandt rejoined the E Street Band once it was renamed (soon in 1995 for all time in 1999) and remains with them. In 1999, he landed one of the series' pivotal roles as Silvio Dante, a fair but lethal mob consigliere and strip club owner. He has received praise for his performance, despite the fact that his appearances in the show's succeeding season were limited to some extent due to conflicts with the E Street Band's tour schedule. Little Steven's Underground Garage, a coordinated radio show that honors carport rock and comparison stone sub-genres, debuted in 2002. On The Sopranos, Van Zandt maintains a particular appearance by always wearing tramp apparel and a handkerchief in front of an audience while wearing a discernible hairpiece. Both are to compensate for his permanent hair loss as a result of a car accident in which he smacked the windshield with his head. [1] [Also heard on NPR]. He gets the second-most amount of recognition in the performance among E Street Band members after Clarence Clemons, much of the time thieving for the audience and in some cases transmitting his unpolished nasal sponsored vocals combined into Springsteen's mouthpiece. He is prominently featured on the songs Two Hearts, Land of Hope and Dreams, Badlands, and Murder Incorporated.
