Steve Sampson Biography

Steve Sampson was a UCLA assistant coach from 1982 to 1985 after playing collegiate soccer at San Jose State University. His first big head coaching position was at Santa Clara University, where he guided the team to a co-championship in the NCAA in 1989. In 1993, Sampson joined the United States national team as an assistant to Bora Milutinovic, and he was on the staff when the country hosted the 1994 World Cup. In April of 1995, after Bora resigned from the squad, Sampson was named temporary coach. In August of that year, he was elevated to full-time coach after leading the US to a shocking fourth-place finish in the 1995 Copa America, which included a 3-0 thrashing of Argentina.
