Steve Johnson, who was born on January 12, 1956, began playing the guitar in 1963 when his uncle Mickey Johnson lent him his electric guitar. Played in rock blues bands in California until 1982, when he relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

There, he met Albert Collins, Willie Dixon, Luther Allison, Duke Robillard, Johnny Winter, and a slew of other blues musicians from the Chicago and Detroit areas. In 1983, he moved to New York City and created The Tanks, a Blues Power Trio, with whom he made three albums, all of which were independently distributed in the United States.
