Steve Fraser's research and writing have focused on two main areas of inquiry: work history and the historical context of American free enterprise. His first book, The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order (1989), co-written with Gary Gerstle, examines the relationship between the New Deal and the rise of the modern labor movement.
He published Labor Will Rule: Sidney Hillman and the Rise of American Labor in 1993, which received the Philip Taft Prize for the finest labor history book.
