On Wednesday, McDonald's announced that Steve Easterbrook, its senior official brand president and chief brand official, will succeed Don Thompson as CEO of the weak fast food behemoth. Easterbrook is the first British CEO of McDonald's. (In any event, Charlie Bell of Australia was the first non-American CEO.) Easterbrook grew up in Watford, England.
Easterbrook provides McDonald's something it really needs right now in one key way: Someone who knows McDonald's inside and out, but also has a knack for rapidly establishing elegant low-cost food brands that provide something more unique and posh than McD's standard toll: Easterbrook rose fast through the ranks of Pizza Express and Wagamama, becoming the CEO of both firms.
