Prior to joining Willow Garage, Steve was the senior manager of the IBM Almaden Research Center's User-Focused Systems Research Group, one of the world's leading human-computer interaction research groups.

Steve formerly oversaw the Advanced Systems Development Laboratory at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC).
