Stephen Hadley Biography

From 2005 until 2009, Stephen Hadley was President George W. Bush's National Security Advisor. Mr. Hadley served as Deputy National Security Advisor from 2001 until 2005. He had specific responsibility in many areas, including a US-Russia political dialogue, Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, and building a strategic partnership with India, in addition to handling the whole spectrum of national security concerns. Mr. Hadley was a principal at The Scowcroft Group (a strategic consulting business led by former National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft) and a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Shea & Gardner from 1993 to 2001. (now part of Goodwin Proctor). He served U.S. corporate customers investing and doing business in China, the United Arab Emirates, and Western and Eastern Europe in his consultancy practice. He represented U.S. corporate clients in transactional and international matters at Shea & Gardner, including export controls, foreign investment in U.S. national security firms, and the national security obligations of U.S. information technology firms. Mr. Hadley was President George H.W. Bush's Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy from 1989 to 1993, and President Gerald R. Ford's National Security Council staff from 1974 to 1977. Mr. Hadley continues to be active in US national security policy, now sitting on the State Department's Foreign Affairs Policy Board. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Atlantic Council and is a member of the Board of Managers of Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory, the Chairman of RAND's Center for Middle East Public Policy Advisory Board, and a member of Yale University's Kissinger Papers Advisory Board. He formerly served as co-chair of the Independent Panel for the 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review, a member of the Department of Defense Policy Board, and a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Mr. Hadley also serves as the United States Institute of Peace's Senior Advisor on International Affairs (USIP). Mr. Hadley has co-chaired a number of senior bipartisan working groups on issues ranging from Arab-Israeli peace to US political strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan to US-Turkey ties in this role. He also contributes to the Institute's Middle East and Asian initiatives. In 1969, Mr. Hadley received his magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa degrees from Cornell University. He obtained his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1972, where he was the Note and Comment Editor of the Yale Law Journal.
