At the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Sagmeister studied graphic design. He later won a Fulbright grant to study at New York's Pratt Institute. At the age of 15, he began his design career at Alphorn, an Austrian Youth magazine named after the traditional Alpine musical instrument.
He relocated to Hong Kong in 1991 to work for Leo Burnett's Hong Kong Design Group. He returned to New York in 1993 to work for Tibor Kalman's M&Co design firm. His time there was brief, as Kalman soon opted to leave design to edit Colors magazine for the Benetton Group in Treviso, Italy.
