Special EFX was formed in New York in 1982 as a duo consisting of guitarist Chieli Minucci and Hungarian-born drummer/percussionist George Jinda; their debut album, Modern Manners, was released in 1985, and they frequently enlisted the help of other musicians, including Dave Grusin, Omar Hakim, and McCoy Tyner, to flesh out their cutting-edge sound.
Long known for their accessible and polished jazz-pop sound, the duo's identity shifted dramatically with 1990's Just Like Magic, which had a more acoustic texture and replaced Jinda's electronic drumming with what he labeled "wooden world music." Minucci and Jinda divorced after 1995's Body Language, with the latter continuing to work under the Special EFX moniker; however, tragedy struck in early 1997, when Jinda had a severe stroke shortly after finishing the album Here to Stay, and went into a coma.
