Spazmatics Biography

In the spring of 1983, physics professor Kevin Stigwood of Alta Dena High in Thousand Oaks, California, lost an argument about String Theory to an upstart student in front of the whole student body and teachers. Both sides agreed that the loser would have to do anything the winner wanted, and the successful prodigy demanded that Mr. Stigwood sing Thomas Dolby's She Blinded Me With Science during half-time at an upcoming state basketball championship game. Professor Stigwood founded The Spazmatics, despite having no musical history and wanting to avoid ultimate humiliation, by tapping the talent of electronics teacher Sydney Balderman (AKA Syd Sonic), who had won international renown in 1981 for his invention of robot drums. Stigwood was overjoyed when Balderman (also the girls water polo coach at Alta Dena Middle School) stated that much of the music could be created by computers and that all he needed was a few of excellent musicians to finish The Spazmatics. Stigwood completed The Spazmatics by bringing in his special needs brother Curtis on bass and teacher assistant Rusty A. Woosmeir (AKA The Raw) on guitar. Members of the cool elite began heckling The Spazmatics with jibes of geek and nerd while everyone else howled with delight when they took center court that evening. Nonbelievers were startled by the group's realism of production, world-class musicianship, and precise choreography when they launched into the first salvo of Science. Stigwood grabbed one of the cheerleaders and began performing the Belinda up and down the court with her in tow, capping up the Spazmatics' performance. The crowd erupted in a standing ovation when it was all finished, and The Spazmatics were formed.
