In the spring of 1983, physics professor Kevin Stigwood of Alta Dena High in Thousand Oaks, California, lost an argument about String Theory to an upstart student in front of the whole student body and teachers. Both sides agreed that the loser would have to do anything the winner wanted, and the successful prodigy demanded that Mr.
Stigwood sing Thomas Dolby's She Blinded Me With Science during half-time at an upcoming state basketball championship game. Professor Stigwood founded The Spazmatics, despite having no musical history and wanting to avoid ultimate humiliation, by tapping the talent of electronics teacher Sydney Balderman (AKA Syd Sonic), who had won international renown in 1981 for his invention of robot drums.
