Sonya Tayeh is a Detroit, Michigan-based dance instructor and jazz and contemporary choreographer best recognized for her work on the television show So You Think You Can Dance. Tayeh was a house dancer during her adolescence and did not begin official dance instruction until she was 18 years old and a student at Wayne State University.
She traveled to California after graduating in 2002 and operated a dance group in San Francisco, where she developed her own style of choreography, which she calls fight jazz. Soon after, she was found by a McDonald Selznick Associates talent agency who attended a performance she choreographed for The Carnival: Choreographer Ball.
