Sonia Nieto, Biography
Teacher Emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture, School of Education, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Sonia Nieto was brought up in Brooklyn, New York, and instructed in the New York City Public Schools. She went to St. John's University, Brooklyn grounds, where she got a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1965. Upon graduation, she went to New York University's Graduate Program in Madrid, Spain, and got her MA in Spanish and Hispanic Literature in 1966. She started her showing profession as a middle teacher of English, Spanish, and ESL in Ocean Hill/Brownsville, Brooklyn, and in 1968 she accepted a position at P.S. 25 in the Bronx, the principal completely bilingual school in the Northeast. Her first situation in advanced education was as an Instructor in the Department of Puerto Rican Studies at Brooklyn College, where she instructed in a bilingual training educator arrangement program co-supported with the School of Education. Moving to Massachusetts with her family in 1975, she finished her doctoral investigations in 1979 with specializations in educational program examines, bilingual schooling, and multicultural instruction. Resigning from the University of Massachusetts in 2006, Dr. Nieto proceeds to talk and compose on multicultural instruction, educator readiness, the training of Latinos, and other socially and semantically assorted understudy populaces. In 2011 she was named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and a Laureate of Kappa Delta Pi, an instruction honor society.
