Sonali Deraniyagala grew up in Colombo, Sri Lanka. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Cambridge University and a PhD in economics from Oxford University. She teaches economics at SOAS University of London and is a research scholar at Columbia University in New York City.
She is the author of Wave, a deeply poignant and piercingly honest narrative of sorrow - and of learning to live with grief - that begins on December 26, 2004, in Sri Lanka, when she lost her parents, husband, and two young kids in the tsunami that she miraculously escaped. She splits her time between New York and North London.
