Ridley Scott was born in South Shields, Tyne & Wear on November 30, 1937. (then County Durham). His father was a Royal Engineers officer, and the family accompanied him as his job took him all throughout the United Kingdom and Europe before returning to Teesside.
Scott wanted to join the Royal Army (his elder brother Frank had already joined the Merchant Navy), but his father encouraged him to pursue his artistic talents instead, so he attended West Hartlepool College of Art and then the Royal College of Art in London, where he helped establish the film department.
