Alan Sugar, the son of a tailor, dropped out of school at the age of 16 and began selling vehicle aerials and electrical equipment from a van he acquired for �100. He established Amstrad at the age of 21. (Alan Michael Sugar TRADing).
Two years later, he was producing low-cost hi-fi turntable coverings, and Amstrad was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1980. The 80s was a golden moment for Sir Alan, with his company's share price tripling in value every year. In 1986, he introduced a low-cost word processor that caught Europe by storm.
