Simone Leigh is a distinguished American artist celebrated for her innovative work in sculpture, installations, video, and social practice, all deeply rooted in exploring Black female subjectivity. Based in New York City, her work delves into the themes of African art, feminism, and the historical and contemporary experiences of women of color, positioning their stories at the forefront of societal discourse.

Leigh's journey in the arts began with a foundational interest in ceramics at Earlham College, leading to a deeper exploration of African pottery during an internship at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. Her career, highlighted by a focus on the labor and artistic contributions of Black women, has evolved to include influential shows and social practice projects that engage communities and critique social structures. Her notable work, the Free People’s Medical Clinic, exemplifies her approach by merging art with public service, providing free wellness services while emphasizing the ongoing contributions of Black women to community health.
