Simon Cowell is a record producer and television personality most known for his comments as a judge on American Idol. Simon Cowell was born in London, England on October 7, 1959. Cowell began his career in the music industry as a mailroom clerk at EMI Music Publishing. Before developing the popular British TV show Pop Idol and its American cousin, American Idol, he worked as a record producer, talent scout, and adviser in the music industry. During his ten seasons as a judge on American Idol, Cowell's caustic comments became legendary. In 2011, he began judging The X Factor. After graduating, he worked as an assistant to an AR executive at EMI in 1979, where he was promoted and given the position of talent scout. Cowell departed EMI in the early 1980s to co-found ES Music with his EMI boss, Ellis Rich. The firm produced numerous hits, but Cowell agreed to leave a few years later. In 1985, he and a colleague founded the indie label Fanfare Records, which was very briefly successful. The firm went bankrupt in 1989. Cowell was forced to move back in with his family due to financial difficulties. Cowell, undeterred, joined on as a consultant with BMG Records later that year. He returned to his own apartment and gradually up the corporate ladder at BMG. He was able to recruit a slew of successful talents for the label, selling over 150 million albums and 70 top-charting songs in the UK and US. Cowell collaborated with Simon Fuller in 2001 to create a program in which the public selects Britain's next major music performance star. Pop Idol launched in the United Kingdom, promising the winner a BMG record deal. With Cowell as a judge known for bringing hopefuls to tears, the program was an instant success, attracting over 10,000 would-be stars to audition. American Idol premiered in 2002, with Cowell returning as a judge with singer Paula Abdul and producer Randy Jackson. Cowell is well-known for fusing his musical and television interests. In 2002, he founded another firm, SYCOtv. American Inventor, America's Got Talent, and X-Factor were all established by the business. The label also produces CDs for several of Cowell's acts, including Leona Lewis and Il Divo. With 2011, Cowell assisted in the Americanization of his famous British show The X Factor. The show is a talent competition in which the winner receives a $5 million recording deal. Cowell even gave up his judging responsibilities on American Idol to sit front and center at The X Factor auditions. Television viewers adored this tournament, which was a ratings triumph. Cowell's fellow judges included veteran music executive L.A. Reid, former American Idol judge and performer Paula Abdul, and Pussycat Dolls vocalist Nicole Scherzinger. The X Factor's second season premiered in September 2012, with a few lineup adjustments. Pop diva Britney Spears and actress-singer Demi Lovato joined the program as judges, replacing Abdul and Scherzinger. The series made another change to the judges panel for the third season, replacing Reid and Spears with Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio. Mario Lopez also took over as the show's principal host after co-hosting with Khloe Kardashian during the second season.
