Shorty grew up in two worlds: one in an upper-middle-class, nearly all white suburban Los Angeles neighborhood with his diminutive parents, and the other in Watts, a district of South Central Los Angeles, where he resided with a family friend to avoid problems at home. Shorty was living on his own at the age of 15.
Shorty was involved in a gang-related shooting when he was 18 years old and was convicted of multiple charges. He was sent to a juvenile institution and then to Folsom State Prison to serve a total term of ten years, ten months, and ten days.
