Sherry Stringfield was born in Colorado Springs as the oldest of three children, but she spent much of her childhood in Spring, Texas. She participated in both athletics and theater in high school. She later attended the Acting Conservatory at the State University of New York at Purchase, where she earned a B.F.A. in 1989.
She shared a dorm room with Parker Posey while attending the State University of New York at Purchase. During this time, she appeared in a number of off-Broadway plays. She took a three-year contract as Blake in the daytime program Guiding Light after briefly working at a theater box office.
