Chicago-based urban historian and social media personality Sermann “Dilla” Thomas maintains a reputation for engaging historical storytelling as he works to safeguard the city's extensive heritage. Thomas has established himself as a key urban figure who leads discussions about urban culture and historical education both in Chicago and at the national level.

The start of Thomas' public history career occurred in 2020 when he used TikTok videos to connect with his 8-year-old daughter through humorous historical content. The distinctive method he used to present information led to widespread popularity which resulted in more than 1 million likes and about 102,000 followers across various social media platforms. His online content presents Chicago neighborhood histories through dual perspectives which both showcase Black community achievements and document the city's architectural development.

After establishing his online presence Thomas created the Chicago Mahogany Foundation as a nonprofit organization in 2021 to protect and distribute the cultural heritage of Chicago's South and West Side communities. The initiative allows him to lead bus tours that reveal the historical value of Bronzeville and Englewood and North Lawndale while promoting community respect and understanding.

The Chicago Tourism Ambassador of the Year award (2022) and the 21st Century Award from the Chicago Public Library Foundation both recognize Thomas's accomplishments. His methods to make history accessible and interesting have appeared on major national shows including The Today Show and The Kelly Clarkson Show.

As Brand Ambassador and Chief of Social Media at the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center Thomas assumed this important position in 2025. The museum benefits from his storytelling expertise through his work as he expands its outreach efforts to share the mission of preserving Black experiences worldwide.

Through his diverse activities between social media content creation and non-profit work and public talks and museum partnerships Shermain "Dilla" Thomas fosters increased knowledge about Chicago's past which attracts younger and more diverse audiences.
