Sherman Jackson is the King Faisal Chair of Islamic Thought and Culture at the University of Southern California, as well as a Professor of Religion, American Studies, and Ethnicity. Jackson was previously the University of Michigan's Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Visiting Professor of Law, and Professor of Afro-American Studies.

He has taught at the University of Texas at Austin, Indiana University, Wayne State University, and the University of Michigan, among other institutions. He was the Executive Director of the Center of Arabic Study Abroad in Cairo, Egypt, from 1987 until 1989.
