While focusing on various types of micro-level experiences that result in a variety of macro-level gender inequalities, my entire body of work addresses the fundamental question of how gender inequality persists even as other structural features of society change—a perspective that emphasizes the social psychological underpinnings of gender stratification.

My previous research focused on the “supply-side” of gender disparity, looking at how men and women's developing professional ambitions and decisions are influenced by gender stereotypes. One study looked at how gender preconceptions about mathematics affect how men and women perceive themselves as mathematically capable, and how this affects their perseverance in pursuing professions in science, math, and engineering.

My latest research has expanded to include “demand-side” discriminatory processes, in which I investigate how gender attitudes influence how competent women are perceived by evaluators such as supervisors, instructors, and people who make employment choices.

I'm also working on a more comprehensive theoretical framework for the biassing effects of gender ideas that can explain both supply-side "choice" behavior and demand-side discrimination. My most recent research, the motherhood penalty, examines how stereotypical views about parenthood influence women's professional evaluations, salary, and hiring choices when they provide proof of becoming a mother.

This study has been reported by the media, including CNN, ABC World News Tonight, and The New York Times, and it has been used in employment discrimination cases, in the California State Senate, and in EEOC guideline materials.
