Sheila O’Donnell Biography

Sheila O'Donnell is a renowned architect. She co-founded the architecture firm O'Donnell + Tuomey. O'Donnell received his architectural degree from University College Dublin in 1976. She earned a master's degree in environmental design from the Royal College of Art in 1980, where she was named best graduating student. In 1988, she and her husband, John Tuomey, founded O'Donnell + Tuomey Architects in Dublin. The business has received several national accolades, including the RIAI Downes Medal on seven times since 1988 and the RIAI Gold Medal in 2000. They have represented Ireland in the Venice Biennale of Architecture twice (in 2004 and 2008) and have been nominated for a number of European prizes. O'Donnell + Tuomey have been featured in newspapers, journals, essays, and books in Europe and the United States. Sheila's work has mostly focused on homes, schools, and cultural organizations in Dublin. Her work includes the Irish Film Institute (1992) and a Ranelagh School addition (1998). O'Donnell has recently collaborated with the Irish Department of Education on the design of Cherry Orchard School, a primary school pilot project for underprivileged areas. It has garnered several honors and has been recognized as an outstanding educational structure by the OECD.
