How Should a Person Be? by Heti has generated raucous debates, produced several think pieces, and received excellent reviews. TIME magazine named Heti to its TIME 100 list of the world's most influential people in early 2013; the magazine named HSAPB one of the most-talked-about books of 2012. Heti has previously written four critically praised books in four different genres.

The Middle Stories, a collection of short stories; Ticknor, a novel; We Need a Horse, an illustrated book for children with art by Clara Rojas; and The Chairs Are Where the People Go, a book of conversational philosophy co-written with Misha Glouberman and named one of The New Yorker's Best Books of 2011.

Heti is the Interviews Editor at The Believer, where she has produced several interviews with writers and artists. Trampoline Hall, a non-expert lecture series given by Misha Glouberman that runs monthly in Toronto and has sold out every performance since its beginning, was founded by her in 2001.

Heti appears as Lenore Doolan in images in Leanne Shapton's book-as-auction catalogue Important Artifacts, which has been optioned for cinema. She also features in Margaux Williamson's film Teenager Hamlet, and she co-owns The Production Front, which organizes exhibits and promotes the work of other artists.
