Shea Hembrey's art imitates natural shapes in an effort to understand how people have always taken and learnt from natural forms. Mirror Nests, a set of metal copies of bird nests shown at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology observatory, was inspired by his early passion with birds (as a youngster, he was a licensed breeder of migratory ducks).
Hembrey works with laser-like focus on a single project, allowing his research into his subject to guide the media and methods of the final output. His healer grandpa motivated him to create works on folk and faith healing, and his perspective on art was significantly impacted while studying Maori art as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar in New Zealand.
