Shawna Robinson began her racing career in the GATR Truck Series in 1984, where she won rookie of the year and a race at Flemington Speedway in 1987. She debuted in NASCAR in 1988, winning Rookie of the Year in the now-defunct Dash Series. In 1988 and 1989, she was awarded Most Popular Driver.
She finished her Dash Series career with three victories and twenty-one top-ten finishes.
