Shane Black, a passionate reader as a child, understood he had to become a writer one day. After leaving U.C.L.A., Black sold his first screenplay, Lethal Weapon, at just 22. After the massive success of the Mel Gibson and Danny Glover movie, Black was asked to write three spin-offs.
The Last Boy Scout (1991), his fourth script, earned him $1.75 million, the highest price ever awarded for a screenplay. He sold 1996's The Long Kiss Goodnight for more than $2 million. After penning the script for A.W.O.L. (1999), despite being the most lavishly rewarded screenwriter in Hollywood, he took a hiatus from action movies.
