An essayist and speaker who supports LGBT rights are Shane Bitney Crone. He had a rural Montana upbringing as a youngster, which presented him with several challenges as he got older and struggled with his character. Nevertheless, he controlled gloom, anxiety, and anguish.

In 2004, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the media and, more importantly, to live in an environment that was more accepting of LGBT people. Shane first met the love of his life, Tom Bridegroom, who was working as an entertainment and TV personality, through a familiar friend.

Together, they traveled to distant reaches of the world, started a successful business, and committed to getting married once the national government recognized their union. After being in love for over six years, Tom tragically passed away after falling accidentally from a four-story building.

The pain of losing Tom was made worse when Shane was refused access to him at the trauma center (because it was erroneously assumed that the two were a couple) and when Tom's family undercut him and forbade him from attending the funeral. The following year saw Shane discouraged, confused, and frustrated.

Finally, he decided he needed to make a plan to show Tom respect and what had happened, and how they may avoid a similar accident in the wake of an unexpected disaster. Shane uploaded a YouTube video titled It Could Happen to You, the anniversary of Tom's death.

The video gained overnight fame online and has received over 20 million views on YouTube and other internet-based platforms. GLAAD selected one as one of the Most Inspiring Videos That Helped Advance Equality. According to Entertainment Weekly, the ad played a significant role in the campaign for nationwide marriage equality in 2015.
