Shad Begum Biography

Shad Begum is the founding director of the Association for Behavior and Knowledge Transformation (ABKT), a group working to improve networks in impoverished areas of Pakistan on a financial and political level. Under her direction, ABKT trained a considerable number of women in various skills and exchanges and dozens of network-based groups to engage with the legislature. Begum recently collaborated with UNDP's Women Political Participation Program and the UN Human Settlements Program as an expert for the "Building Gender Ladder Project." She served as a counselor in Dir Lower for a significant period while contesting neighborhood decisions in 2001 as a free competitor. She is an Ashoka Lifetime Fellow and the recipient of several awards, including the Women's World Summit Foundation's "Prize for Creativity in Rural Life" and the U.S. Department of State's 2012 "Worldwide Woman of Courage Award" (2008). Ms. Begum is building the groundwork for a Center for Women's Democratic Development in northwest Pakistan as part of her cooperation.
