Seth Shostak Biography

Seth Shostak is the Senior Astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. He graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor's in physics, and the California Institute of Technology awarded him a doctorate in astronomy. Seth has devoted much of his career to radio astronomy studies on galaxies and amassed about 60 publications in scholarly journals. He used the Westerbork Radio Synthesis Telescope while working at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in Groningen, Netherlands, for more than ten years. In addition, he established and oversaw a business that created computer animation for television. Seth has penned about 500 pieces for major magazines and websites on various subjects related to astronomy, technology, movies, and television. He gives about 60 speeches yearly at academic and professional institutions, lecturing on astronomy and other topics in various educational settings. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has honored Seth as a speaker. He also served as the SETI Permanent Committee's Chair for the International Academy of Astronautics for several years. Seth has frequently been interviewed for radio and television. He has been or been heard on the BBC, Nightline, The O'Reilly Factor, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Coast to Coast AM, NPR, CNN News, and National Geographic Television. He hosts the weekly, one-hour astrobiology radio show "Big Picture Science." Nearly a dozen books have been edited by and written by Seth. Sharing the Universe: Perspectives on Extraterrestrial Life, his first widely read book, was published by Berkeley Hills Books in March 1998. Cosmic Company, his second widely read book, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2002. His most recent trade book is Confessions of an Alien Hunter. He has co-authored the astrobiology textbook Life in the Universe (Pearson) (National Geographic). He received the Klumpke-Roberts Award for popularising astronomy in 2004.
