Dr. Seth Berkley, a physician, and epidemiologist became the CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in August 2011 and is in charge of advancing access to new and underutilized vaccinations to safeguard the world's poorest children. In its 15 years of operation, Gavi has already touched half a billion youngsters under his direction.
He guided Gavi to its second successful replenishment in 2015, securing US$ 7.5 billion in pledges from donors to help immunize 300 million kids by 2020. Before starting Gavi, Dr. Berkley established the International AIDS Vaccination Initiative (IAVI), the first public-private cooperation for developing vaccine products, in 1996. He oversaw IAVI for 15 years as president and CEO.
