Sergio had a passion for social and environmental justice as a young child. His parents, who lived apart, and his mother, a Jew from Mexico, ended up settling in Spain, where women had little legal protections and privileges due to the regulations of Franco. In any event, his mother fought a protracted and challenging battle for child care.
Since Sergio's mother created Spain's first refuge facility for mistreated women and fought for outsider rights, he has been a devoted social renegade. Sergio's mother's work had a significant influence on him, and by the time he was 14 years old, he was active in several social equality organizations.
