The Second City is an improv comedy group best renowned for being the first ongoing improv theatrical troupe in the United States (Chicago) and Canada (Toronto). There are additional programs based in Los Angeles.
Small groups of undergraduates, including young actresses like Mike Nichols and Elaine May, convened at Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap, a pub on the University of Chicago campus, and eventually became the Compass Players, a 1950s cabaret revue production.
