Sean Sherman Biography

Over the past 30 years, Sean Sherman, an Oglala Lakota born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has been cooking around the US and the rest of the world. His primary focus in terms of cuisine has been on revitalizing and considering native food frameworks in a sophisticated culinary environment. Sean has worked diligently and independently to build these food frameworks that include knowledge of Native American farming techniques—using and collecting wild food, managing land, producing salt and sugar, hunting and fishing, and promoting food conservation. To understand better how to transmit the flavor of Native American cuisine to the modern world, Native American migrational explore natural culinary techniques as well as Native culture and history. He established The Sioux Chef in 2014 to serve the Minneapolis/Saint Paul region as a chef and culinary educator. He also helped organize and launch the Tatanka Truck food truck, which promotes pre-contact foods from the Dakota and Minnesota territories, in 2015 in cooperation with the Little Earth Community of United Tribes in Minneapolis. Gourmet expert Sean has given lectures and shared his knowledge with groups at Yale, the Culinary Institute of America, the United Nations, and other venues, as well as in several publications and radio programs. He has also hosted dinners at the James Beard House in Manhattan and Milan.
