Scotty Smiley is from Pasco, Washington, a tiny town in the state. He went to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, after graduating from high school. He finished after four fantastic years and relocated to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he completed Infantry Officer Basic Course and Ranger School.
He was soon sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he commanded a platoon of 45 men. Smiley was in front of a suicide vehicle bomb in Mosul, Iraq, in 2005, while leading his Platoon. Smiley was blinded and momentarily paralyzed as shrapnel went through his eyes after the man blew himself up.
