Scott Waddle Biography

Local Austin resident Scott Waddle graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign. He began a twenty-year career in the submarine force, serving on board the Trident Ballistic Missile pontoons of the Atlantic Fleet in Alabama and Kentucky and the rapid attacks of the Pacific Fleet in San Francisco and Greeneville. After receiving a Master of Science degree from the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., in June 1998, Scott Waddle was hand-selected from a highly competitive group of 250 officials to place an order for the USS Greeneville's upgraded Los Angeles class rapid attack submarine. Waddle became Greeneville's commanding officer in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in March of 1999. However, commander Waddle's life was irrevocably altered on the crucial day of February 9, 2001, when he gave the order to execute a crisis surface maneuver, which unintentionally led to the 9000-ton submarine colliding with the 500-ton Japanese fishing vessel Ehime Maru, killing nine people on board. Scott Waddle accepted responsibility for the accident against the advice of his attorney and the Navy's commander. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in October 2001 and resigned as a Captain while on assignment.
