Scott Rayter Biography

Scott Rayter's dissertation, He Who Laughs Last: Comedy Representations of AIDS, earned him his Ph.D. in English from the University of Toronto in 2003. Since then, Rayter has disseminated papers for meetings and articles on odd and AIDS-related literature. In addition, In addition, Rayner teaches courses in contemporary verse and American and Canadian literature for the University of Toronto's Department of English. Despite his academic background in English, Rayter has been a part of Sexual Diversity Studies since its inception, participating in courses on scholarly and cinematic depictions of AIDS and Queerly Canadian, a joint approach between SDS and Canadian Studies. Rayter served as the interim Associate Director and Acting Director of Sexual Diversity Studies at its inception. He is now making inroads inside the Center for Sexual Diversity Studies' Steering Committee. Recent projects include Queer Can Lit's Inventory, a display of books, diaries, zines, and images at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, which he co-curated and authored. Most recently, he co-edited Queerly Canadian: An Introductory Reader in Sexuality Studies (Canadian Scholars' Press, 2012) with Maureen Fitzgerald.
