Auteur of the St. Martin's Press story, Campusland Johnston, attended Yale after growing up in Manhattan. From there, Wall Street (home of the well-known Salomon Brothers of Liar's Poker) and a brief stay in Hong Kong. He launched two or three dance clubs in NYC as an afterthought. One with the name Baja had a remarkable run.
From then on, he started and ran a diversified quant investment for around ten years while also trying to teach as a substitute at Yale. He also published an excellent little book on golf-betting games somewhere. After running out of money, Johnston switched to tech and assisted in founding two new businesses.
